The future of Austinmer’s dilapidated Headlands Hotel may still be in limbo, but the fallout from the most recent attempt to develop the site continues.

The owners of the iconic pub, Thirroul Property Holdings, went into receivership in June last year, three months after a Land and Environment Court bid to develop the site - by development partners Weriton Finance - only partially succeeded. Weriton received permission to build serviced apartments and a day spa on the site but its applications for seven bed-and-breakfast style dwellings were rejected.

'Poor maintenance' to blame for train derailment

The NSW transport safety watchdog has blamed poor maintenance for a coal train derailment at Clifton last November which inconvenienced thousands of commuters and left rail authorities scrambling for alternative transport arrangements.

The accident occurred just after midnight on Thursday, November 24, when an axle buckled on the 45-wagon coal train operated by Pacific National.

Crawl through ocean pools

THE 10th annual Great Ocean Pool Crawl will make a splash in seven pools from Coalcliff to Towradgi this Sunday, May 6.

Participants must swim two laps in each pool as they raise money for the Cancer Council.

Registration is at the Palm Court Hotel in Corrimal at 9am. A courtesy bus will take swimmers to the first pool at Coalcliff for a 10am start.
